How We Got Our Start
Coming from the mining industry, the founders of Pontotoc Sand and Stone got started in the market during the upswing of 2014, supplying satellite dryers from a small pit in southern Missouri. As the downturn of 2016 hit, a search for high-quality tier 1 proppant in-basin began. Starting with our mine in Oklahoma, Pontotoc Sand Company embarked on a nationwide search for the highest-quality sand with in-basin pricing. The result was our high-tech Oklahoma facility that surpasses all industry standards for efficiency, sustainability, and safety.

How Is Frac Sand Used?
Frac sand is a crucial ingredient to hydraulic fracture mining or “fracking.” This method of oil and gas extraction mines resources from low-permeability shale reserves like the Marcellus Shale, Bakken Shale, and Haynesville Shale, which are all known to contain vast reserves of oil and gas. Fracking is not a new method, and early in the oil rush of the 1800s, oil producers found they could increase yield with explosives.
To understand how frac sand is used, here is an overview of the fracking process.
Shale oil reserves are deep underground and fracking combines vertical and horizontal drilling methods to reach the shale using an L-shaped drilling shaft. The horizontal portion may stretch up to two miles underground. Shale is impermeable, so once a shaft is drilled through the layer, small perforations are made in the shale using a mix of water, frac sand (or proppant), and chemicals at high pressure. Once the water is removed, these fissures will close so proppant holds the fissures open while providing a conduit to allow gas and oil to come to the surface.
The proppant is the part that Pontotoc plays. High-quality frac sand has a tough job:
- It needs to be strong enough to hold fractures open under extreme pressure. Horizontal wells are sometimes 10,000 feet underground, which means proppants must be crush resistant to hold the fractures open as long as possible to make sure the well produces.
- It must be chemically inert so it doesn’t react with other chemicals used in the fracking process, which may include hydrochloric acid and other caustic compounds.
- It must have a uniform, round shape that maintains strength but also creates small openings for gas and oil to pass through.
Silica proppants are a highly specialized product, and modern producers like Pontotoc Sand and Stone are always refining the process to deliver a pure silica product that performs better under extreme circumstances.
