Limestone Chippings
From roads to foundations, Pontotoc limestone is a solid base
Our crushed and chipped limestone aggregates are available in a variety of sizes from three-quarter-inch to four-inches bases. We also provide clean rock ranging from one inch to four inches.
Crushed, chipped limestone and gravel is a popular base for roadways. It is easy to focus on the surface material, but any road that has heavy vehicular traffic needs a solid base. While some areas have soil that can withstand the weight and abuse of heavy traffic, most areas have sand or clay-based soil, which means a sub-base is needed to drain water and provide a level base for concrete and asphalt.
Chipped limestone is angular, and it packs very hard with little dust. Not only is it a popular material for roadways, but it is also used as a base for foundations. Just like roadways, a building’s foundation has to support weight evenly, which means clean material is needed to top the local soil or clay and provide a level base for foundations. Chipped limestone is also used in concrete to provide a strong aggregate.

Limestone Is a Common Sedimentary Rock That Is Used for Construction and Agriculture Around the World
Because it is so useful and versatile, it is in constant demand, and mines and quarries are common in areas where limestone is abundant. Limestone is mined in one of two ways:
Open pit mines or quarries use open excavation that exposes a layer of limestone, which is then blasted, breaking the rock into small pieces. Open pit mining is simple and is how companies such as Pontotoc achieve high rates of production. While open pit mines have a large footprint, responsible mining companies have learned to mine the materials they need responsibly and with little impact to the surrounding area.
Limestone Is Also Mined Underground Via Networks of Shafts or Tunnels
This method is used when producers need rock that has certain characteristics. Underground mining is expensive and produces materials at a much lower rate than above ground mining would.
Regardless of the method used, mining companies like Pontotoc work closely with geologists and environmental experts at every stage of a mine’s lifecycle to ensure the impact on the environment is as minimal as possible.
At Pontotoc, safety is vital. Our crushed limestone quarrying procedures are controlled by industry best practices and mine safety regulations that protect our employees and the surrounding area.
