40/80 Frac Sand
Coarse Proppant for Specialized Hydraulic Fracture Extraction
Our 40/80 mesh frac sand is formulated to provide the high crush resistance and uniform shape our customers have come to expect.
Hydraulic fracturing operations require proppants that can perform under very specific standards and provide a conductive pathway for oil and gas production. Sourced from mines in Oklahoma, our 40/80 mesh proppant meets all American Petroleum Institute standards for acid solubility and crush resistance.

Frac sand’s roundness and its high silica content separates it from other types of sand. Where other sand may contain several different types of minerals and rock types, frac sand contains mostly durable quartz. This material is essential to withstanding extreme pressure while retaining the strength to keep shale fractures open under high pressure.
Treating acids and formation fluids are composed of harsh chemicals, and the purity of the silica in the frac sand is essential to maintaining an efficient flow of oil and natural gas. While there are many sources of silica sand in the U.S., much of it isn’t appropriate for use as a proppant due to its size or shape, which makes Pontotoc sand an important resource for oil and gas extraction.
Frac sand that has been washed, graded, and is fully within specifications is a highly specialized product, and it is critical that each proppant grade is not mixed or contaminated by other sands. Frac sand is transported through a number of familiar methods, including rail, trucks, and barges, and the more sand that can be moved at once, the lower the cost.
Each year, millions of tons of frac sand are transported from mines to wellsites. Initially these mines were in Wisconsin and Minnesota, but the costs and logistics of moving tons of sand across the country increased the importance of mines like ours, which are located in Oklahoma and are close to wells in Texas and New Mexico. One of the biggest advantages Pontotoc provides is the geographic proximity to where the sand will be used. Our facilities can quickly load and manage hundreds of trucks a day, and through our automated processes, our sand delivery is a solid link in any supply chain process.
At Pontotoc, safety is vital. Our crushed limestone quarrying procedures are controlled by industry best practices and mine safety regulations that protect our employees and the surrounding area.
