The process of extracting silicon from sand is heavily regulated and follows these steps:
Frac sand mining takes place in remote areas that require the removal of trees and grass.
Sandstone rock layers are buried under overburdened material that must be removed before mining starts.
Sandstone requires explosive charges to loosen it before being removed from the ground.
Front-end loaders and backhoes are used to scoop and remove sandstone rocks. The rocks are loaded onto trucks and sent to a crusher.
